When I go to Sunset, I offer my time, my attention, my effort, and my skills. I contribute to group meetings by sharing my ideas, working in a team, and helping others in the community. Firstly, In the meetings, we talk about planning big events that can help people in the community by providing some fun and educational experiences for everyone in the community. In these meetings, I offer skills such as focus, attention, patience because some of the events we plan have a long process. Without attention, focus and patience, the events we plan and run would not go smoothly. They would have too many errors and even be incomplete in a sense. Secondly, I give my time and effort to Sunset by volunteering and showing up consistently. I put the effort in by focusing and paying attention, as I mentioned above and if I didn’t give my time, I would be letting others down because we are a team so we have to count on each other. Lastly, The opportunity cost isn’t that big because there isn’t really anything better I could be doing during this time. All I have to give is my time and best behaviour to volunteer. I don’t have to give any anything such as money. I can just volunteer help people in the community by setting up fun events for people in the community and by contributing ideas for the betterment of the community and the centre. 3. I gain many things from volunteering at Sunset. I gain connections to the community, fun experiences and many valuable skills. Firstly, I gain connections because I get to interact with the staff of Sunset, our youth leader and help them with tasks and events by being apart of the youth council. By doing this, I build connections with people with whom I wouldn’t have otherwise. This comes in very handy when applying for university, reference letters, resume references, cover letters and etc. Volunteering here also gives me a lot of volunteer hours and not only just hours, but it also gives me consistent volunteer hours which looks better on a resume. Secondly, it comes with a lot of fun experiences. You get help others in your community by planning and organizing which enhances your self-esteem in a way, bond with others and build connections. This is what makes doing this worthwhile. Thirdly, I develop and learn a lot of valuable skills such as patience, teamwork, leadership, organizational and management skills. Working in this environment requires all of these skills, so as one continues to work in it, they develop along the way. We have to work in a team to accomplish certain tasks, we have to be leaders in the community, and we have to be organized. One thing I didn’t mention is time management skills. This is probably the most valuable thing I’ve learned. You really have to learn how to balance school and your extracurricular activities in order to excel. These kind of skills are hard to learn overnight, which is why I am grateful that I volunteer here. Examples of what we do:
